There are so many benefits to learning a second language. No matter what language you want to learn, there are a lot of great reasons to just give it a go.
Having traveled internationally to treat patients, Juhi Deolankar is passionate about patient care and global health. She is fluent in English, Hindi, and Marathi, and conversational in Spanish. She knows the benefits of learning multiple languages.
Some of the benefits include:
- You get to experience another culture in a more profound way. Being able to speak to locals in their own language is the best way to truly understand another culture. You can meet and converse with so many new people this way.
- Learning a new language opens your mind. Humans tend to be afraid of the unknown, but learning a new language helps you engage with people you never would have been able to otherwise. You’ll realise that people are not so different, no matter where in the world we come from.
- People who speak two or more languages experience a lot of cognitive benefits. Often they have better memory, can solve problems easier, and have increased listening skills.
- Things wont get lost in translation. If you know another language, you can eventually pick up on nuances that would otherwise get lost when translating that language into English.
